What renters insurance covers in Texas
Your landlord's policy covers the building. It covers nothing you own. Renters insurance covers your personal property against fire, theft, vandalism, smoke, and water damage from burst pipes, plus your personal liability if a guest is injured in your unit or if you accidentally damage the building. It also pays additional living expenses — hotel, meals, and the difference in rent — if the unit becomes uninhabitable. For most Houston-area renters the entire policy runs $12 to $25 a month.
